What is Death Café?

Death Café Winchester is a free to attend community event, enabling participants to discuss openly issues around end of life – death, dying, funerals and bereavement.  There is no agenda and no speaker, discussions grow from the thoughts and issues that those who are present want to discuss on the day.  Your facilitators will help to ensure everyone has a chance to contribute.  The idea behind Death Café is to make end of life an easier subject to talk about.

Death Café is not able to provide grief counselling or bereavement support.  If you are struggling with bereavement and live locally in the Winchester area please contact Winchester Bereavement Support. Nationally, support is available from Cruse Bereavement Care.

Is there a charge to attend?

There is no charge to attend Death Café, but you are able to purchase refreshments on the day. Cabinet Rooms offers soft and hot drinks, wines, beers, cocktails and mocktails. They also offer a selection of very tasty cakes, many homemade by Marcus or his Mum.

How did Death Café come about?

Death Café was founded in the UK in 2011 and to date more than 16,000 Death Cafés have been held in 85 different countries.  For more information on the Death Café movement and useful resources see: https://deathcafe.com/

Who runs Death Cafe Winchester?

Ruth Chase is a Humanist Funeral Celebrant, with a background of working in both family and Coroner’s courts.

Chelsea Duke is an Independent Funeral Celebrant and qualified Funeral Director, who also volunteers with registered charity Winchester Bereavement Support.

About the venue

Cabinet Rooms is an independent cafe bar opposite the Theatre Royal in Winchester. We will have the use of a private downstairs room – an ideal venue for group discussion. Gary and Marcus, the owners, are very supportive of the Winchester community and allow us to use the room free of charge. For this reason, we would be grateful if you would purchase some refreshments if you are able to.
